Seven numbers update live as you type: words, characters with spaces, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, reading time at 200 words per minute, and speaking time at 130. Below them, every word you have used more than once appears with its frequency and its density as a percentage of your total word count.
There is no cap on how much text you can paste. Whole chapters, full dissertations, an entire site's copy β the counter handles it, because the counting happens in your browser rather than on a server. That also means your text stays on your machine. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged. If you are counting a client contract, an unpublished manuscript, or coursework, that matters more than the count itself.
Every repeated word is shown with its density β how often it appears as a percentage of your total words. Paste an article, find your target keyword in the list, and read the number next to it.
What's a good keyword density? Roughly 0.5β1.5% is natural. Google has never published a target, and treating density as a dial to tune is outdated thinking β modern search reads meaning and related terms, not repetition counts. But density is still a useful smoke alarm: anything above 3% almost always reads badly out loud, which is why words crossing that line are flagged in red here.
If your keyword is under 0.5%, the fix isn't to jam it in more times. Cover the topic more thoroughly and use related terms β synonyms, entities, the questions readers actually ask. That's what earns relevance now.
Tip: the "hide common words" filter is on by default, so the, and and of stay out of your way. Turn it off if you want the raw frequency of every word.
Most counters stop at the numbers. This one also shows which words you keep reusing β and repetition is usually the fastest thing to fix in a draft.
It lowercases each word, strips punctuation, and counts how often it appears. Anything appearing more than once is listed with its frequency, sorted from most frequent down. Words shorter than two characters are skipped.

The gap between them is roughly 15β18% for normal English prose, so a 2,000-character limit with spaces is about 1,680 characters of actual letters.
Split the text on whitespace β spaces, tabs, and line breaks β and count the resulting chunks. That is the same method Microsoft Word uses, which is why the numbers here match Word for plain text. Hyphenated terms like well-known count as one word. Contractions like don't count as one. Standalone numbers count as words.
Counting by hand works for a tweet. For anything longer it is slow and unreliable, which is why every writing tool has a counter built in.
Word counting works for any language that puts spaces between words β including accented Latin scripts, Urdu, Arabic and Cyrillic. Chinese, Japanese and Thai don't separate words with spaces, so for those the character count stays accurate but the word count won't mean much.

The visible number matters more than the maximum. A LinkedIn post has 3,000 characters available but earns its click in the first 210 β so front-load the hook and use the counter to check where that fold lands.

Reading time here uses 200 words per minute, the common average for silent reading of general prose. Speaking time uses 130, which is a comfortable presentation pace β fast enough to hold attention, slow enough to be followed.

Writing a five-minute talk? Aim for about 650 words, not 1,000. Nervous speakers go faster than they expect, so it's worth timing a read-through rather than trusting the estimate alone.
These assume 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. Font and spacing shift the page count, so when a brief specifies pages, ask for a word count instead β it is the only unambiguous measure.
